Welcome to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe’s Catholic schools!
This year begins another chapter in a story that began long ago; Catholic education in New Mexico is one of the oldest educational traditions in North America. For centuries, religious and lay educators have taught generations of children in this special place. Before many institutions that surround us today existed, Catholic educators helped children to learn, grow, and pray.
That remarkable legacy now rests in the hands of the current teachers, staff and administrators who are making a tremendous difference in our schools and communities. God has placed them in the lives of our young people—not accidentally, but providentially.
Our culture often tells young people, "You are what you achieve, what you own, or what others think of you." The Gospel tells them something profoundly different: “You are loved. You are known. You are called. And you belong.” The children in our schools have that truth reinforced daily by Catholic school teachers—through their words, their patience, their encouragement, their compassion, and their presence.
Our mission is not simply to help students think. It is to help them think wisely. The process of discernment that they learn asks: Is this true? Is this trustworthy? Is this good? Does this reflect God's vision for human flourishing and wellbeing? A Catholic education helps to form students who can evaluate information critically while remaining grounded spiritually.
It is through this process that students encounter the profound light of Christ and the priceless joy of learning every day in their classrooms, school Masses, playgrounds, athletic fields, and performances. These lessons allow them to apply their learning and faith daily in the service of their parishes, neighborhoods, and communities. Our Catholic schools have produced a significant number of leaders and shining lights in our state’s educational, healthcare, entrepreneurial, business, visual and performing arts, and political realms.
For centuries, Catholic educators in this land have carried the light of Christ forward. This mission is perpetuated by our staff who continue to teach with wisdom, lead with courage, serve with joy, protect with vigilance, welcome with hospitality, and discern with faith.
May every child entrusted to our care encounter Jesus Christ through the ministry we share. God bless you, your families, your schools, and the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. Have a wonderful school year, everyone.
